Resume Writing

Resume is a formal business paper, written by job applicants in order to provide the necessary information about themselves. Thus, it is an important aspect of any career, as resume allows making a positive impression on the employer.

As a rule, the resume contains the following sections: summary, general information (name, address, date of birth), the position sought, education, job experience, special training, personal abilities, accomplishments and interests. There are three major resume formats: chronological, functional and combined. The chronological format is the classical one: the main stress is placed upon the "Experience" section and all previous jobs are listed in the chronological order. The sections, containing the information about personal accomplishments and interests are normally not included, so this format is appropriate when the applicant switches from job t another within the same profession. In addition, this format is used in the conservative professions and spheres of employment (government service, police).

The functional format emphasizes the applicant's skills and abilities as well as their achievements. The functional resume explains to the employer what exactly the candidate can do for the company, so it is appropriate in case the candidate begins a career in a new field. This resume demonstrates the skills which derive from the earlier employment (internship, practice) and should become the major resume format for those who have tried themselves in multiple areas and who have already made a significant scientific contribution. The major disadvantage of this format is the lack of information about the applicant's responsibilities and functions in earlier jobs.

The combined format contains the elements of the two aforementioned types. For instance, in order to clarify the responsibilities in earlier jobs, the applicant can list them in the point form and includes the sections of achievements and skills. The major advantage of this format is flexibility, or the possibility of combining the other formats in different variations. Thus, it is useful t those who apply for jobs in diverse directions simultaneously ( e.g. management and engineering).

In order to create a masterpiece CV, the applicant should consider carefully the employer's needs and place the right accent. For instance, applying for the position of customer service manager, one should give more detail about the related experience (e.g. arrangement and delivery of workshops, public speeches) and highlight the corresponding communication skills. If the employer requires the candidate's photo, a picture of fair quality should be attached.

A good and worthy resume should contain the information about the applicant's objectives. They should not be reduced to receiving a position, but include the statements concerning the professional development as well as the interest in research in the related science and technology (as these two areas are very dynamic nowadays).

One of the most critical components of the resume is summary. It should include several statements about the candidate's qualification, experience, skills, objectives and the position sought. The summary is the first point of the CV to which the employer pays attention, so the applicant should highlight the qualities that distinguish them from the rest of "contestants". It s highly recommended that the summary is concise and does not excess three sentences.

The final point to discuss is the volume of the resume. It is generally counterproductive to write more than two pages and less than a page.
